Achieving Your Goals – Tips and Tricks

On Sunday 26th November, Team North met up in Preston to discuss ‘The Future of Team North’.

I really enjoy Team North days as they give me enthusiasm to put my plans into action. To help us achieve our goals and get want we want out of our title, we came up with some “SMARTIES” goals. You might know them as SMART goals but we added a little something extra to make them more exciting. Now, you’re probably wondering what SMARTIES goals are. Well, they’re goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-bound, Inspiring, Exciting and Stimulating.

Specific – Your goals need to be detailed and specific. The more specific you can be, the better chance you have at achieving your goal.

Measurable – How will you know when you have achieved your goal? How will you measure your progress?

Achievable – How can you achieve your goal? Make a list of ideas.

Realistic – Your goal must be something that you are willing and capable of achieving.

Time bound – You have to have a time frame in order to have urgency, without urgency you won’t be motivated to do it.

Inspiring – You must be inspired by your goal in order to be motivated to achieve it.

Exciting – Is it exciting for other people? Does it excite you?

Stimulating – Plan and organise so that you are focused on your goal.

For example, a normal goal might be ‘I want to raise money for Variety’.

But, a SMARTIES goal would be ‘I am going to raise £150  for Variety by organising a bake sale on the 28th of March, this will inspire others and I am excited to do it’.

So, I have been specific in what I’m doing, raising money, (£150 for Variety) by doing a bake sale. I have put a time limit on it which gives me enough time to plan it in advance and I know it’s achievable because I’ve given myself enough time to do it.

I’m sure there’s something that you want to achieve but perhaps you don’t know where to start or how to go about it, well this is where SMARTIES goals help. Did you know that if you make a SMARTIES goal and write it down, you are 60% more likely to achieve it than if you just make a normal goal?

Using this format has really helped me plan and achieve goals that I wouldn’t of been able to do otherwise. This last Team North day gave us all the opportunity to share ideas and advice about achieving our goals.

It was really helpful to have a second opinion. So my advice would be, to surround yourself with people who can support your ideas and encourage you to achieve them. I’m grateful to be a part of a good team that helps me to do this.

I hope this will be as useful for you as it was for me.

Thank you for reading.
